Quand les étoiles rencontrent la mer
FRANCE
RAYMOND RAJAONARIVELO

The second feature from Madagascar's one-man crusade to create cinematic images of his native island, Raymond Rajaonarivelo, Quand les étoiles rencontrent la mer (When the Stars Meet the Sea) had its international premiere in the Market at Cannes this year. A dark tale of superstition and courage, poverty and spiritual strength, it is set against the stunning backdrop of an island often thought to have been the original Garden of Eden.

Born during a solar eclipse and thus thought to have supernatural powers of destruction, a baby boy is abandoned in a village cattle-pen to be trampled to death, as is the custom. But young Kapila which means cripple, a nickname he gets as a result of injuries sustained in the cattle-pen is rescued and brought up in another village, where the girl who rescues him survives by sewing shrouds and Kapila himself sells empty bottles.

Something of an outcast, Kapila discovers that he does indeed have supernatural powers when, at the age of seven, he calls down a thunderbolt to avenge the death of his only friend. Later, grown into a man, he sets out back to the village of his birth to confront the father who left him to die.

To realise his vision this time around, Rajaonarivelo has been able to call on a US$3 million budget and help from one of France's most internationally-minded sales agents, Jacques Le Glou, who produced the film through his own company, with help from broadcaster La Sept.
