Jury - Awards


Official Competition
The official jury at the San Sebastian International Film Festival will award the following prizes: Gold Shell for the Best Film, Special Jury Prize, Silver Shell for Best Actor, Silver Shell for the Best Actress, Jury Prize for the Best Photography, Jury Award for the Best Screenplay; and a Jury prize for any other technical or artistic aspect considered appropriate by the jury. The Jury consists of: Jorge Arriagada, Andrea Ferreol, Angela Molina, Jim McBride, Juan Ruiz-Anchia, Stephane Tchal Gadjeff and is led by its president, Stephen Frears.

New Directors Award

The New Directors jury is charged with granting the largest monetary prize on the festival circuit -- the New Directors Award of the San Sebastian International Film Festival. The 25 million pesetas prize (about $145,000) is shared by the winning film's producer and director. The first or second features of directors participating in the Official Section or Zabaltegi are eligible whenever the films have not already been screened in any other festival. Festivals' Top Prize

This award, sponsored by ya.com, will be awarded to a film in the Zabaltegi section and not competing for the New Directors Prize. The prize will be chosen by the audience who will vote on a point scale after each screening.

The Audience Prize
The distributor of the winning film will be awarded the Audience Prize, 5 million pesetas (30,000 Euros or about 29,000 dollars), to be used toward its promotion. The award aims to encourage the distribution of top-quality films.

A Youth Prize
Sponsored by El Mundo Pais Vasco, this prize is awarded to 200 youths between the ages of 17 and 22.

The Donostia Prize
Michael Caine in Cider House RulesIn what has been a year of awards for Michael Caine - including winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in The Cider House Rules and being named a Sir by the Queen -- his newest honor will be to receive the Sebastián International Film Festival's Donostia Award.

The Donostia Prize was created in 1986 to honor a lifetime of achievement in the film industry. Gregory Peck was the first recipient of the prestigious award, followed by Glenn Ford (1987), Vittorio Gassman (1988), Bette Davis (1989), Claudette Colbert (1990), Anthony Perkins (1991), Lauren Bacall (1992), Robert Mitchum (1993), Lana Turner (1994), Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve (1995), Al Pacino (1996), Michael Douglas, Jeremy Irons and Jean Moreau (1997), John Malkovich and Anthony Hopkins (1998), Fernando Fernán-Gómez, Vanessa Redgrave and Anjelica Huston (1999), all of whom have come to San Sebastián to receive their prize and show their appreciation.
