Moxie! is the spirit with which the Santa Monica Film Festival was founded in 1996, and is the basis by which it showcases independent filmmakers. Moxie! is an homage to the sheer guts and perseverance that Indie filmmakers must have in order to succeed in an extremely competitive and challenging industry.

The Moxie! / Santa Monica Film Festival was originally held amidst smoke-filled bar lounges for an audience of a dozen or so die-hard filmmakers in 1996. It wasn't long before the venues were filling to capacity and film submissions were pouring in daily.

Today Moxie! is a monthly showcase providing filmmakers with a venue to bring their films to the heart of the industry without distractions of public relations hype and the normal media blitz that all too often causes great films to be overlooked.Whereas the average festival creates road blocks with high price of admission, marketing regulations and special judging committees, the Santa Monica Film Festival prides its process as being completely unique and unregimented with the mission to fill the void by providing a more accessible venue.

In the culminating annual Moxie! Awards, the Santa Monica Film Festival presents the most popular films reviewed during the previous year as well as premiers.

The Santa Monica Film Festival will hold the second annual "Moxie!" Awards at Santa Monica's Bergamot Station from Feb. 25-28, 2000. Approximately 85 films from around the world will be shown during the four-day film festival.

"Moxie!" Awards will be given for the following categories: Drama, 100% (for documentaries), Latin Cinema, Millennium (for science fiction shorts), One Step Beyond (for experimental and/or avant-garde shorts), contemporary Shorts, Animation Shorts and Audience Favorite.

This year the festival will pay tribute to Martin Scorsese and Joe Mantegna (Joe’s confirmed). Confirmed participation include: Henri Lubatti, Jami Gertz, Jamie Lee Curtis, Joe Mantegna, Kelly Curtis, Malcom Jamal Warner, Marco Leonardi, Marley Shelton, Martin Landau, Michael Gorgian, Mimi Rogers, Randy Ray Moore, Tim Daly, Timothy Bottoms, Nestor Carbonell, Henry Winkler, Jerry Stiller, Amy Stiller, Karren Black among others.

The Santa Monica Film Festival/Moxie! Awards is a non-profit organization. Proceeds go to benefit Santa Monica Museum's Kids Arts Station.
