Sadness
"Sadness," a monologue by William Wang, is based on the
stage play of the same name that photographer Yang performed with
such great impact. There he explored the themes of gay identity and
Chinese immigration to Australia, speaking directly to the public
while showing slides of friends and family members. Director again
has Yang directly addressing the public, but the documentary does
more than this.
Yang slowly unearths hidden family stories, and, though the link between
his Chinese background and the sad stories of the friends who have
recently died of AIDS gradually intertwine with his family history
in a very natural way. Paradoxically, it was his Chinese/gay identity
that brought him the career he now enjoys and that now allows him
to deal with the grief he experiences regarding the loss of his mother
and gay friends. Though Yang often addresses very personal matters
in a serious way, many of his stories carry a light-hearted undertone.
