Japan - French Premiere
Mange-kyo
The director invites photographer Arimoto Shinya to shoot a series
of photographs of two young women, one from the country and one from
the city, and through their presence produce a photographic book on
modern Japan. She will film the hole process. He agrees and a hazardous
journey begins in which the interests of models and photographer are
bound to collide. (…) Irritation takes over from enthusiasm and gradually
even the film crew gets involved in the growing conflict. In the end,
Noami has to give in and cannot complete the film the way she has
planned it. She has to find a new approach, and her identity as a
filmmaker is thereby transformed. Mange-kyo shows this painstaking
change in a non-dramatic way, with a camera that is not worried about
seeking climax.
