London's animators in demand

Disney combines participation in London animation festival with talent scouting

Walt Disney Feature Animation (WDFA) will be in London this month to recruit animation talent. Besides traditional animators, the company is looking for cgi professionals and special effects specialists.

A team of five executives from WDFA, including WDFA president Peter Schneider and producer Don Ernst, are expected in London to participate in the London Effects & Animation Festival (19-21 November). The company is the event's primary sponsor. Other major players sending their key executives and animators include Pixar, Jim Henson Productions, Industrial Light and Magic, Digital Domain and The Moving Picture Company.

Schneider is to open LEAF on 19 November, giving his personal vision of the future of animation. The opening address is followed by Ernst, who will discuss the sequel of Disney's Fantasia with the upcoming Fantasia Continued. Due for completion in 1999, WDFA is expected to employ around 300 people to work on the film.

With less than 50% of the creative staff currently in place, the WDFA team will also use their stay in the UK to recruit talent as London is considered an important market with a great number of both traditional and computer animation artists.
