Midnight
Sun Film Festival
14-
18 June
Above
the Arctic Circle, the 15th annual Midnight Sun Film Festival
ended last week in Sodankyla, Finland after days of rain, wind,
and of course -- 'round the clock sun. Japanese filmmaker Shinji
Aoyama (whose film Eureka
won the FIPRESCI prize
at Cannes) presented three of his films to the audience,
while director Abbas Kiarostami was unable to attend as planned,
due to visa problems.
Munich
International Film Festival
24 June - 1 July
At the 18th annual Filmfest München, this year's motto is "obsessed
by the movies." More than 1,000 directors from over 60 countries
have personally introduced their films here, and the alumni include
Theo Angelopoulos, Luc Besson, Roger Corman, Stanley Donen, Abbas
Kiarostami, George Lucas, Anthony Minghella, Roman Polanski, Oliver
Stone and Quentin Tarantino. This year's festival marks the beginning
of the World Tour of Night Train, the latest feature
from Les Bernstien. It is the dark and dingy story of love lost,
lost money and lopped heads in the surreal streets and back alleys
of Tijuana.
