Norwegian International Film Festival
27 August - 3 September

This year's Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund is truly living up to its name, with sidebar sections devoted to film from Italy, Germany, the US, and Nordic countries. The New Nordic sidebar will open with Detector from Pal Jackman, which will be screened on the Internet before hitting theatres. Swedish director Liv Ullman (Faithless) will be the Honorary President and Faithless will screen in the main program.

Summer Shorts Film Festival
23 - 24 August

This year's fourth annual short film festival, kicking off in New York City, will screen more than 20 films over the two days, including four world premieres. Scheduled pictures include: Delusions in Modern Primitivism from Daniel Loflin; Ice Fishing (which took home the Sundance Film Festival Honorable Mention) from Alex Kondracke, Decharge/Discharge (which won Best Canadian Short at the Toronto Film Festival) from Patrick Demers and the world premieres of Judge Manifesto from John Lofaso. In addition there will be a party with the Playboy Playmates (Playboy is a sponsor of the festival) and an appearance by James Gandolfini, also known as Tony Soprano on the HBO hit TV show "The Sopranos."

Summer Shorts

Sarajevo Film Festival
18 - 26 August
With more than 90 films on the program, and 54, 000 visitors expected to attend, this year's Sarajevo Film Festival will send the Bosnian capital into a movie frenzy. The festival screens an eclectic mix of films, divided into several sections. Pics on the program include Lars von Trier's Dancer in the Dark, Darren Aronovsky's Requiem for a Dream and Topsy Turvy from Mike Leigh. Sarajevo also features a sidebar section of Eastern European cinema, featuring Bosnian filmmakers. This year's general public highlight will be open-air screenings of American blockbusters Gladiator and Gone in 60 Seconds.

Festival of Fantasy, Horror, and Science Fiction
17 August - 10 September
Dark CityThe festival screens at the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA. This year's first annual event will screen favorites such as Planet of the Apes (with Charleston Heston), Hellraiser (with writer/director Clive Barker attending the festival), and Dark City (director Alex Proyas will also attend) will be presented along with a choice selection of rarely seen films from around the world.
