As such, we are a community-based, non-profit organization that actively seeks input and funding from local residents and businesses, both private and public.

We are staffed by a combination of local volunteers and permanent employees.

PRESS RELEASE

Tiburon, CA-2002 will mark the beginning of a new era in the town of Tiburon with the launching of the First Annual International Film Festival. Conceived as a way to enhance the artistic presence and the culture of the city, the festival's organisers are seeking the support of the local community.

The people of Tiburon represent some of the most well-travelled and educated citizens in the world, and yet there is nothing for them, locally, to satisfy their desire to go beyond themselves. We hope that by showing films from all over the world, this festival can inspire the people of Tiburon in a variety of ways.

The festival's founder and organiser is Saeed Shafa, a 25-year resident of Tiburon and internationally recognized film critic. Said Mr. Shafa, "This is very much a community-based event. Everyone involved, thus far, is either family or friend and we are all Marin Country residents."

I had the idea for the film festival after speaking with local residents about foreign films. I realized that the people of Tiburon's tastes are more sophisticated than in many other communities. Without leaving town, there are very few options for local residents to satisfy their curiosities. I believe that they will respond favourably to the event and that it will be a week that people look forward to every year."

The festival will take place at the Tiburon Playhouse Theater the week of March 22-28 of 2002.

A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT THE CITY OF TIBURON

The word "tiburon" comes from the Carib Indian dialect for shark and was adopted by the Spaniards since their earliest explorations of the Americas. Punta de Tiburon (or "point of sharks") as it was originally called, first appeared on maps of the San Francisco Bay in 1776. It's a well-earned name considering the number of sharks that roam the shallow waters of the peninsula that forms the town.

Abundance has always been associated with this area from the days when the over fifty Miwok Indian tribes thrived off the Bay's bounty, to the town of successful citizens and luxurious homes and businesses it's known for today. With its opulence, has come a sense of vision. In the 1880's the present town of Tiburon began to emerge as a railroad stop and soon the ferry became the fastest way to get from Marin County to San Francisco, a service that continues today.
Throughout its history there has been an undeniable link between Tiburon and San Francisco, which has made possible a special kind of cultural exchange between the two. The Festival hopes to continue that tradition.
