Competition

The Beach
by Danny Boyle

The search for such an ideal place drives a disconnected young drifter in The Beach. Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio) meets other rootless adventurers in a Bangkok hotel. One stranger talks of a secret island and leaves a map of its probable location. Richard talks a French couple into joining him. Risking life and limb, they eventually reach their paradise and discover a secret community of like-minded settlers.

Also in competition today is
The Captain's Daughter, which Proshkin adapted from Aleksandr Puschkin's 1836 epic
novel of the same name. Out of competition: Julien Temple's abrasive new documentary about the Sex Pistols, The Filth And The
Fury.
