| Fucking Åmål | |
|
Åmal is a dead-end Swedish town. Living there, like in any small town, can be tough, especially if you're an adolescent facing the disapproval of your peers. And it can only get worse when you realise that you aren't "normal". Such is the complication that arises in this sweet coming-of-age comedy from director Lukas Moodysson. * Agnes has a crush on Elin. But so does Johan. Alcohol plays a big role in breaking the monotony in Åmal, and one Saturday night in search of free drinks 14-year-old Elin shows up for the unpopular Agnes' birthday party. On a dare, Elin gives Agnes a kiss on the lips and unexpectantly finds it pleasant.

| As the adolescents work out their problems, this winning debut feature manages to make some nice observations about growing up young and possibly lesbian. "The things that made a good film," observes director Moodysson, "are a story that moves you and actors whom you can believe." Owen Levy |
