Huang Jianxin, director of competition entry Mai Fu (Surveillance), has expressed his regret at Deng Xiaoping's death, which was announced yesterday.
'We are very sad because he was a great reformer,' said Huang. 'In the last 10 years, the reform movement has come a long way and I hope it can continue to make an impact.'
Deng's reforms during the 80s moved the state film industry into the private sector. This has allowed foreign investment from countries including Hong Kong, Taiwan and France, creating the conditions for the current wave of acclaimed Chinese auteurs to work.
Huang said on one level his film was a portrayal of how social changes instigated by Deng are affecting ordinary people. 'It is a difficult situation, changing from a planned to a market economy,' he said. 'Traditional values are changing and people have a sense of dislocation. That is history; society moves on and develops.''
Festival director Moritz de Hadeln, who welcomed the delegation of yesterday's Chinese film at the press conference, also expressed his sadness at the passing of Deng Xiaoping. 'You are here,' he said, 'partly as a result of Deng Xiaoping's new politics and I would like to express my deepest regrets on this sad day.' Adam Minns
