Foreign language pass notes

Life Is Beautiful was the first foreign language film to get seven nominations. Das Boot (1982) and Fanny And Alexander (1983) got six.

Life Is Beautiful was the second film to be nominated in both the Best Foreign Language Film and Best Picture categories in the same year. The other was 1969's Z. The Emigrants was nominated in both categories, but in different years (1971 and 1972 respectively).

Roberto Benigni's Oscar for best actor was the first win for an acting performance in a foreign language film since Sophia Loren's in Two Women (1961).

Benigni is only the second person to direct himself to an Oscar. The first was Laurence Olivier, in Hamlet (1948).

A record 47 countries have submitted films for consideration as the Best Foreign Language Film of 1999. The previous record was 45 countries in 1994 and 1998.

Bhutan, Nepal and Tadjikistan have entered films for consideration for the first time.

Five films have won the Foreign Language Film Oscar and another award as well: 81¼2 (Costume Design, 1963); A Man And A Woman (Original Screenplay, 1966); Z (Film Editing, 1969); Fanny And Alexander (Costume, Art Direction, Cinematography, 1983); Life Is Beautiful (Actor, Score, 1998).

Six foreign language films have been nominated for best picture: Grand Illusion (France, 1938); Z (Algeria, 1969); The Emigrants (Sweden, 1972); Cries And Whispers (Sweden, 1973); Il Postino (Italy, 1995); and Life Is Beautiful (Italy, 1998).
