First with In the Bedroom and now with his haunting, sensual adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s novel, Todd Field proves himself to be one of the most perceptive and provocative filmmakers on the American scene. The restless adults in this unnervingly sexy, faintly menacing, and coolly wise drama who look after their kids (in settings of deceptive innocence), turn out to be children themselves, all too apt to stray off the playground path in their hunger for love, sex, and a temporary freedom from responsibilities.

The magnetic cast is headed by a vividly expressive Kate Winslet as a misfit mother among the swing set; with Angels In America’s Patrick Wilson as the neighborhood’s one stay-at-home dad; Jennifer Connelly as his hard-edged workaholic wife; and a remarkable Jackie Earle Haley as the other piece of the puzzle.
