Vesak is the most important religious festival to Buddhists, commemorating the Birth, Enlightenment and Parinibbana (death) of Lord Gautama Buddha. This festival is celebrated every year, in the month of May.

Sri Lanka is well known for celebrating Vesak at the grandest scale, showcasing its greatest treasure- Buddhism.

With the successful completion of "Vesak 2009" and "Vesak 2010" International Buddhist Film Festivals, "Vesak 2011" will take centre stage exhibiting the principles of Buddhism in visual media. VESAK 2011 - Festival will include Film Exhibitions and Competitions for Short, Feature, Documentary, Animated, Mobile films Music Videos and Workshops on Buddhism and Film Making, a Buddhist Art & Photography Exhibition, Vesak e-Card Competition, Animated Pandols, and several unique Vesak attractions.

"Vesak 2011" will mark 2600 years of Buddhism in the world. It is held as a national event where His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka is the Patron of the festival and the Honorable Speaker of The Parliament will act as the chairman of the festival.

The Festival is staged in collaboration with the National Film Corporation of SRI LANKA at the BMICH Convention Centre which is the largest exhibition complex in Sri Lanka.
