The Shape of Rex's blogTHE SHAPE OF REX begins with Rose, a married woman in her late thirties, visiting her old, married boyfriend Rex for the first time in over twenty years to tell him that he is the father of her daughter. The story deals with the events that are triggered by that visit, entwined with a parallel story of the former lovers' teenage affair in the 1980s. But it also is as much about Rex’s desires to live by the dictates of his heart -- rather than the expectations of others -- as it is about the fate of everyman who dares to pursue his untameable passions in a world that chastises non-conformity. The issue throughout is whether Rex and Rose, despite being married to others, can successfully complete the arc of their teenage love, which but for the intervention of others might have lasted forever. With finely calibrated performances from an ensemble cast, The Shape of Rex reveals both the young lovers and their mature selves decimated by a love that Canadian society promotes yet castigates. And at its conclusion, the souls of the lovers both young and old are stained by actions and consequences that their consciences might scarcely be able to bear. The Shape of Rex |
