IBAFFUser Info:User type:Festival Organizer Blog Category:Festival Country:Spain City:Murcia Website:www.ibaff.com User BioIn 2008, Puertas de Castilla, Murcia, co-produced “The Molky Way“ a documentary produced by Gonzalo Ballester, which tells the story of a journey made by an Iranian woman who is reunited with her brothers alter 20 years of separation. The result of this project could be seen in a series of Iranian films based on the relationship between travel and artistic creation which were shown in October of that year together with titles such as “Siyamo” and “De la tribu de Bani Asad”, both directed by the Iranian Mahmoud Reza Sani.
As a consequence of this experience, Puertas de Castilla decided to create a film festival selecting films for the competition which were mainly based on travel in all its guises, from geographical journeys to human or even spiritual introspections which would also have a mobile nature allowing the films to be shown in other Spanish or foreign cities. Under the title The Ibn Arabí Cinema Awards, the first lifetime achievement award recognized contributions made to the world of cinema. In the first ceremony the award was bestowed on the Iranian film-maker Majid Majidi, who received the award personally in February 2010.
Ibn Arabi was a great sufi mystic born in Murcia in 1165. His tireless travelling took him from the south of Al Ándalus and right across Morocco to reach the most important cities of the Middle East and ending up in Damascus, the current capital of Syria, where he died in 1240. His importance, in the widest sense of the word, comes from his thoughts and ideas about geographical and spiritual travel - the search for oneself, his experience of life, promoting tolerance and respect towards all cultures and beliefs and the search for beauty and love in all daily things and in nature. In this second edition, the Ibn Arabí lifetime achievement award will be received by the Italian producer Giuseppe Tornatore, who loyally represents the spirit of the festival which this year provides an official open section of the competition and special section about films from other international festivals which also encourage universal conciliation, respect towards diverse beliefs and the culture of understanding. Under the slogan Travel and Creation, the festival will be an open door towards the dialogue and recognition of the dignity of others and will serve as a model for the spiritual journey towards unity and reunion with opposites, the worlds, the two horizons, and inseparable dimensions of the life of Ibn Arabí.
