Wariazone poster

Wariazone trailer

Wariazone trailer. Wariazone is a documentary exploring the notion of transgender in Indonesia.

Wariazone

user
Director: Kiwa & Terje Toomistu.
Wariazone explores the notion of transgender in Indonesia and relations between gender identity and freedom. It raises questions about the politicization of morality and religion after the reform era. The male-to-female transsexuals who are known by the artificial word ‘waria’ (wanita, woman + pria, man) are a well-known phenomenon in the cultural mosaic of the country with the world’s largest Moslem community. The warias are often described in the local context as a combination of masculinity and femininity, a third sex, or a woman’s soul born in the body of a man. Traditionally, variations in gender identity have been considered to be holy in many Indonesian cultures, but today the warias have been relegated to an outlaw zone on the outskirts of society. The consequences of the stigmatization based on the rigidity of social constructions (morals, religions, hetero-normativity, etc.) include non-recognition of their gender identity, discrimination, limited work opportunities, the sex industry, and HIV/AIDS. Wariazone not only situates itself within the context of gender and sexuality, but also points out how the expression of gender identity is ruled by ideology: the ‘truth’ is related to the power. Among many activists (Yulianus Rettoblaut, Merlyn Sopjan, Lenny Sugiharto, Ienez Angela, Shinta Ratri, to name a few) and sex workers, Dédé Oetomo (a leading activist for LGBT rights), Julia Suryakusuma (Indonesia's own feminist fatale) and Didik Nini Thowok (legendary cross-dressing performance artist) also appear in the film. Visits are made to several waria gathering places in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Malang and Surabaya, and to the world's only Koranic school for transgendered people.

The 3rd Bangalore Queer Film Festival 2011

Call for Submissions
for the 2nd Bangalore Queer Film Festival
Last day for entries: 30 January 2010

Introduction

Bangalore has hosted film festivals on themes related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT or Queer) communities since 2003. Although they were small events, since their transformation into The Bangalore Queer Film Festival (BQFF) in April 2009, held at the Alliance Francaise, the festivals made Bangalore a destination for international Queer films.

Organisers

BQFF 2010 is organised by Good As You (GAY), SWABHAVA Trust and We’re Here and Queer (WHAQ!). GAY (www.goodasyou.in) is a support group (est. 1994) for LGBT people in Bangalore and is one of the oldest support groups in India. SWABHAVA Trust (est. 1999) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation working with LGBT issues, including providing access to support services in Bangalore. Both GAY and Swabhava have co-hosted previous queer film festivals in Bangalore. This year, another group called We’re Here and Queer (WHAQ!), a queer women’s support group (estd. 2009) is also a co-organiser. GAY and WHAQ! regularly organise film screenings at their weekly meetings. All the groups are non-funded and operate entirely on donations.

BQFF 2009

The 1st edition of the Bangalore Queer Film Festival was held in Bangalore on 10 and 11 April, 2009. The event had a tightly packed schedule screening more than 20 feature, short and documentary films alongside panel discussions on being out at the workplace and short performance pieces using drama, dance, Sufi music and poetry.

BQFF 2010

The 2nd edition of the Bangalore Queer Film Festival will be held in Bangalore in February 2010. Screening feature, documentary and experimental films, BQFF 2010 caters to a large Bangalore public interested in international films. Panel discussions on key issues concerning the LGBT community in Bangalore/India will also be organised as part of the schedule.

MIX NYC: New York Queer Experimental Film Festival

MIX 22: New York Queer Experimental Film Festival, November 17-22, 2009

The Godmother

Director: Jeanine Corbet.
“The Godmother” is a feature documentary that takes an intimate look at the life of Fred Gorski a.k.a. Rain Storm and his cosmetic gender transformation salon Fairplay. Located in suburban Staten Island, Fairplay offers men a safe haven where even the most unlikely crossdressers can express themselves without fear of reprisals. A former Drag performer, licensed hairdresser and cosmetologist Rain founded Fairplay after the tragic loss of his long time partner left him heavily in debt and with his once thriving hair salon in financial ruin. Armed with left over wigs, beauty supplies and closets full of clothes Fairplay evolved from offering basic services to crafting full fantasy worlds. The documentary film “The Godmother” offers a unique glimpse inside this world where men find relief from the demands of their everyday lives by donning extensive female accoutrements. Here the lines of gender and sexuality are blurred in absolute contrast to the surrounding status quo where gender is anything but fluid.

"Trained In The Way of Men" Sylvia Guerrero and Director Shelly Provost

"Trained In The Way Of Men"Left: Participant Sylvia Guerrero, mother of Gwen Araujo.  Right: Director Shelly Provost This powerful documentary explores the controversial events surrounding the violent murder of Gwen Araujo in Newark California - a murder that shocked the country when it made national headlines.

Slamdance Doc: RED W/O BLUE

Sunday, January 21-- I applaud the Slamdance documentary programmers for selecting the fascinating film RED WITHOUT BLUE, directed by Brooke Sebold, Benita Sills, and Todd Sills. After several screenings at the Sundance Film Festival Sunday, I walked up Main Street to the screening rooms of Slamdance and into the World Premiere of RED WITHOUT BLUE. At this point I vaguely remembered why I wrote this movie down on my screening grid. I actually wasn't even quite sure what it was about. However,...
