The Plumstead Short Film Festival, launched in December 2010, and culminating in a 2-day screening in March 2011, involves hands on workshops, networking opportunities, screenings and interactive sessions with experienced film professionals. There are three categories of film; up to 20 mins Fiction, up to 20 mins non-fiction and up to 5 mins mobile phone submissions. The competition is open to all: first-timers who live locally can benefit from the programme of free workshops to help them produce the best from their mobile phones, whilst the longer films are aimed at attracting global interest from experienced film makers. The theme of the Festival, The Edge of the City, was carefully chosen to evoke not only the idea of a geographical location, but a psychological state of mind. That is it embodies the experience of suburban living, which is shared by many people around the world whose homes are on the fringe of the metropolis. At the same time, it hints at a psychological element of social unrest and cultural disturbance. Additionally, there is a suggestion of the marginalisation of certain members of society, who do not always have a voice, e.g. due to their ethnicity, age, disability, perceived social background, sexuality or income. In this way the festival allows the exposition of any or all of these themes for the education and entertainment of the audience. Some aspects of the screenings may be familiar to them, others previously unknown, but all will be embraced in the Edge of the City theme. The festival will contribute to the awareness of the issues from the “EDGE” in a literal and a metaphorical sense. The Edge of the City therefore encourages submissions that explore the theme of life on the outskirts. However, we welcome submissions in all genres and styles, as we aim to bring the cinema to the edge of the metropolis. The Edge of the City brand will be carried forward after the festival in the form of a pop up cinema and Film Club to encourage appreciation of the medium of film.
