THE SKIN I LIVE IN (2011) dir. Pedro Almodovar

THE SKIN I LIVE IN is, more than anything, an Almodovar tribute to Almodovar. Utilizing his own colour schemes, offbeat interweaving narrative and shooting technique, THE SKIN I LIVE IN will easily become one of the main works by this long-standing Spanish director.

It tells the story of Robert Ledgard, portrayed by Antonio Banderas - on a much awaited return to the silver screen and in his native language - a brilliant plastic surgeon obsessed with creating a pain-resistant artificial skin as a result of his wife having been horribly burned in a car crash as a way to save her. Quite disturbingly, Ledgard's lab also serves as a prison to his only patient, Vera Cruz, brilliantly played by Elena Anaya (SEX AND LUCIA) and a rising star in the Spanish film firmament.

With twists, turns and flashbacks, Almodovar stops short of parodying himself and is able to carry out the most farcical of narratives with panache and continues on creating his very recognizable mix of lust, sex, obsession, infidelity and just sheer dark comedy.

A true must-see for the World Cinema fan and for any Almodovar fan.
