What is KASHISH?

KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival is a Pride event that is held annually in Mumbai, India. It showcases films with gay, lesbian, transgender themes from the world over to advocate and entertain both LGBT & general audience and facilitate dialogue on LGBT issues. The primary objective is to mainstream queer visibility through cinema.

A success story - KASHISH 2010

The first edition of Kashish, held from April 25-29, 2010, was a milestone event in the LGBT movement in India. It boasted of many firsts - it was the first ever queer film festival in India to be held in a mainstream theatre: PVR Cinemas and at Alliance Francaise; it was also the first ever queer film festival in India to apply for and obtain an exemption from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; and it was also the first ever queer film festival in India to have competitive categories and cash awards.

Looking ahead - KASHISH 2011

Taking this successful initiative forward KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival 2011 promises to be BIGGER, BOLDER & QUEERER. The second edition will be held from May 25-29, 2011 at two venues in Mumbai, one of which will be a multiplex theater. This year, the festival will showcase 125 films from 22 countries.

Why does KASHISH need your support?

The LGBT community in India was underground and largely invisible till a high court order on July 2nd 2009 decriminalized homosexual behaviour. Since then the LGBT community has become more active and visible leading to several LGBT initiatives and events. KASHISH is one of them and has become a wonderful way of Mainstreaming Queer Visibility. It has been a very empowering experience for the LGBT people in Mumbai.

KASHISH is also now recognized as a Pride Event from India by Interpride, an association of all Pride events around the world.

With no government or state funding available for LGBT events in India and no cultural or community grants available, we have to rely on organizations and companies that believe in supporting LGBT community building.

It is for this reason that we are writing to everyone who would like to make a financial contribution, however small. This is an investment which will help us organize the festival and make it into a sustaining annual Pride event.

FAQs 

WHAT IS THE MONEY NEEDED FOR?
The primary cost for the festival goes toward paying the theater rental fee as well as publicity, advertising, printing programs, outreach, etc.

WE ARE NOT IN INDIA, CAN WE STILL SUPPORT? 
Yes, you can pledge from anywhere. India is right now a growing economy with considerable spending power and your presence at KASHISH will be noticeable, especially by the LGBT community, an intelligent globe-trotting community that may be interested in spending the 'Pink Rupee' at international destinations, perhaps at your pride event or organization.
