Short Film Corner: Color in the Campus Moviefest

The Campus Moviefest collection in the Short Film Corner here at Cannes is filled with color.

Chroma, a short film from Meghan Foehl and John Merizalde, is a black-and-white film about the plight of a painter seeking inspiration--inspiration he briefly finds in the one element of color in his otherwise drab and lifeless world: a mysterious woman in a long blue dress. However, as his muse's color fades, so too does his motivation. While this film is visually beautiful--illustrated not only by the mysterious muse, but by the multicolored works the young man creates, the ending falls flat--quite literally--as the main character jumps to his death due to loss of inspiration. While this sentiment is relatable to anyone in a creative field, the execution is rather cold and distant and leaves the audience unfulfilled.

Conversely, Dennis, another Campus Moviefest short from Joyce Yong and Matthew Tutak, has all of the story elements for a great comedic short, but is lacking in technological finesse. This film, which recounts the story of a boy and his animated (quite literally) roommate has promise with a light and funny script and fun, childlike visuals--the cartoon roommate, a fuzzy blue blob with antlers, is only one of the colorful elements that make up this whole. However, the sound is poorly cut, which makes interactions between the boy and his roommate distracting and makes willing suspension of disbelief challenging at best.
