Amazing Barry Lyndon digital screening at B-Est with Q&A with Stanley Kubrick's producerJan Harlan

The all-time classic masterpiece screened to full audience at Bucarest B-Est, the film was part of an hommage to Jan Harlan (Stanley's producer) which included The Shining, ClockWord Orange... The beautifully restored digital screening restored the memories I had kept from the original print in 1972.

Such a rare treat to have the privilege of hearing more on this superb work by Jan Harlan. the film took 3 years of his life (1 for pre production and one year of editing, "We were few and slow, we took our time..."

The buzz in 1972 was huge around the natural llty lit scenes shot with candle lights, they were a true technological achievement in those days, most of non professional lenses (and film stock) could do the job these days. But Jan had to come up with a special lens (Carl Zeiss off course) used by Nasa that allowed them to shoot in these extreme conditions of lightning. (without any depth of field of course), The continuity girl almost had a nervous breakdown because of the candles which burnt away...had to be checked, replaced...

Of course it did not allow any dephth of field

The aim of the festival has been to become a forum that encourages new cinema trends. We wish to discover new talents, to promote young filmmakers that have achieved recognition both at a national level, as well as in prestigious international competitions. We wish to bring a selection of best quality films to the cinema audience of Bucharest, and we invite you to take part in this event.

B-EST is a festival dedicated to art cinema, but also to those that want to express something new and different through film. Although the focus is represented by independent creations, low and medium-budget productions, B-EST has always managed to include important international awarded films in its selections.
