Berlinale Co-Production Market 2010 to Help Find Partners for 37 Selected Film Projects – and Delighted with Competition Invitation
The seventh Berlinale Co-Production Market (February 14-16, 2010) will bring the producers and directors of 37 selected film projects from 22 countries together with 450 potential co-production and financial partners.
For each of these projects, the Berlinale Co-Production Market’s team will arrange numerous thirty-minute one-on-one meetings with interested potential partners. Over 1000 meetings in two days will be scheduled based on the needs of the projects and the individual requests of the participants.
At least two films that the Co-Production Market successfully assisted in the past years will be screening at the Berlinale 2010: the Iranian-German co-production The Hunter (by Rafi Pitts) has been selected for Competition, and Esmir Filho’s feature debut The Famous and The Dead will be showing in Generation 14plus.
Overall, the Berlinale Co-Production Market’s success rate is impressive: 40% of the projects selected – that is, over 90 films – have already been completed.
The projects chosen for 2010 include works by award-winning directors such as Marco Bechis (Garage Olimpo, Birdwatchers), Jánosz Szász (Woyzeck, The Witman Boys) or Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return, The Banishment). A coincidence or maybe a trend in the selection of projects in 2010: two are directorial debuts by well-known actors. Individual meetings will be arranged in Berlin for Hiam Abbass’ The Inheritance as well as for In Embryo by Ulrich Thomsen. A special Co-Production Market “baby” is the project The Have-Nots that will be presented by the German production company K5 Film: in 2006, at the “Breakfast & Books” event, the book was brought to the attention of the producers who then acquired the rights and began working on adapting it. Now they are ready to take the next step, again at the Berlinale Co-Production Market: as one of the projects picked for the official selection, K5 Film is now looking for co-production and financial partners.
Out of 354 submitted projects, 23 feature projects with budgets between one and seven million euros have made it into the official selection. These projects are to be presented exclusively by producers with international experience; what’s more, they must already have at least 30% of their financing in place. In collaboration with CineMart Rotterdam, three additional projects have been chosen for the “Rotterdam-Berlinale Express”. They will participate in both the CineMart and the Berlinale Co-Production Market.
With 267 submissions, this year has also seen a record number of entries in the “Talent Project Market”, which is held in cooperation with the Berlinale Talent Campus. Eleven projects by newcomers will be presented within the scope of this event.
In addition to the prescheduled individual meetings, up-to-date information will be provided at the Berlinale Co-Production Market on trends in film financing, marketing and international co-productions.
Events like the popular Speed Matching, as well as the many networking opportunities in the Producers’ Lounge, complete the framework programme, which participants may tailor to their needs.
On February 16, the fifth edition of an event will take place that revolves around film rights for literary adaptations. At “Breakfast & Books”, which is organised in cooperation with the Frankfurt Book Fair, ten selected bestsellers and top new releases will be presented to producers as potential material for the screen.
Main partners of the Berlinale Co-Production Market are MDM – Mittel-deutsche Medienförderung and the European Union’s MEDIA Programme.
The Berlinale Co-Production Market is part of the European Film Market. The Berlin House of Representatives – directly across from the European Film Market in the Martin-Gropius-Bau – is once again cooperation partner and venue.
