Homage
to Ang Lee
The
tux-clad Ang Lee arriving for the 25th anniversary evening.
|
Originally
from Taiwan, Ang Lee arrived in the USA in 1978 where he did
his film school studies, graduating from New York University.
Fine Line, a 45-min film, won him best film and best director
from the NY University Film Festival. His first feature film,
Pushing Hands, was followed by The Wedding Banquet, which
won the Gold Bear at Berlin 93. Other titles include Sense
and Sensibility (1996) and The Ice Storm (1997), which was
screened at the 50th anniversary edition of Cannes and won
Best Screenplay (James Schamus). In Ang Lee's honor, the Deauville
festival will present Ride With the Devil in an Avant-Premiere
screening. James Schamus signs the screenplay once again of
this period film set during the American Civil War battles.
Ride with the Devil

On
this seventh day of the festival, the entire troupe of photographers
declared a strike in protest of the disrespectful way in which
they are treated in their line of work. There were no photos
of Ang Lee for the evening homage as the photographers all
posed their cameras at their feet in demonstration. No offense
to you Ang.

Panorama
One
of the highlights of the Panorama selection is the director's cut
version of Blood Simple directed by Joel Coen, written by Joel and
Ethan Coen starring Frances McDormand and John Getz. The film was
first presented at Deauville in 1984 when it came out. As the story
goes, a rich but jealous man hires a private investigator to kill
his cheating wife and her new man. But, when blood is involved,
nothing is simple.
