Closing
Day
The
Deauville festival comes to a close today with the award ceremony
and two final Avant-Premiere screenings:
Pushing Tin and the closing film A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Avant-premieres
|
Pushing
Tin stars John Cusack (Con Air, Grosse Pointe Blank)
as the cocky air traffic controller Nick Falzone, and Billy
Bob Thornton (Sling Blade, A Simple Plan) as his stoic rival,
Russell Bell. This irreverent look at the prevention of mid-air
and mid-life collisions also stars Cate Blanchett as Nick's
wife Connie, and Angelina Jolie as Russell's wife Mary. |
|
Michael
Hoffman, Director
"At the beginning I just had an image of this fat little Puck
riding through the Tuscan countryside on the back of a turtle.
The rest of the film sort of spun out from that."
Shakespeare
had originally set his story in an English version of ancient
Greece where Elizabethan spectators would have felt right at
home. Looking for a setting closer in time for a contemporary
audience, while keeping the highly formal aristocratic culture
in which it takes place, Hoffman decided to transport the story
to Tuscany, a part of Italy he knows well, at the turn of the
century. |
