COP LAND
Garrison est une cité-dortoir du New Jersey baptisée "Cop Land" en raison du nombre élevé de policiers new-yorkais qui l'habitent et y font régner la loi... leur loi.
Rentrant à Garrison après son service de nuit, l'officier de police Murray Babitch est coincé sur le pont George Washington par deux fêtards éméchés qui lui font une queue de poisson. Furieux de cette plaisanterie, Babitch se lance à leur poursuite et, se croyant menacé d'une arme, fait feu sur le conducteur. La voiture percute la rambarde et ses occupants sont tués sur le coup.
L'incident attire aussitôt sur les lieux des dizaines de représentants de la loi, dont l'oncle de Babitch, Ray Donlan. En fouillant l'épave, les enquêteurs découvrent que le "revolver" braqué sur leur jeune collègue n'était qu'un banal antivol...
Officer Murray Babitch is hitting the road after a night on the town in New York City. Babitch is just one of many NYPD cops who work and play in the big city by day, but return home to Garrison, New Jersey - a quiet little town across the George Washington Bridge, so overflowing with cops they call it Cop Land - by night. Driving home across the bridge, Babitch gets sideswiped by a pair of guys on a wild late-night joy ride. In a fury, he races to catch up to their speeding vehicle - only to find they're pointing a gun in his face. Out of instinct, Babitch grabs his own weapon, shoots, and watches the joyriders' car crash into a wall, killing them both.
In no time, the bridge is wall to wall cops, including Babitch's uncle, and one of the ruling officers of Cop Land, Ray Donlan. One look inside the wreckage reveals the object pointed at Babitch was no gun, just a steering wheel lock...

James Mangold
Il suit des études de cinéma et d'art dramatique au California Institute of the Arts.
Durant cette période, il travaille en étroite collaboration avec Alexander Mackendrick, tout en montant et interprétant de nombreux spectacles.
Il signe aussi quatre courts métrages, dont " Barn " en 1985. A 21 ans, il écrit pour les studios Walt Disney le téléfilm "The Deacon Street Deer" (1986), puis "Olivier & Compagnie". En 1989, il s'installe à New York pour passer une maîtrise de cinéma. Il signe en 1991 pour la Columbia University un court métrage, "Victor". Il participe ensuite au séminaire d'études supérieures de Milos Forman avant d'écrire "The Claymation Easter Special" (1992) et de réaliser "Tree/Line", un documentaire sur sa mère, l'artiste Sylvia Plimack Mangold. Il fait ses débuts comme scénariste/réalisateur avec "Heavy", présenté en 1996 à la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs du festival de Cannes. "Copland" est son deuxième long métrage.
