BEING THERE

Start with 23 miles of sparkling beaches. Add more than 300 miles of palm tree-lined waterways. Mix in more than 3,000 hours of sunshine annually (more than eight hours a day). Add 1.3 million friendly inhabitants and a vast aquamarine ocean, and you've only begun to total the assets that make Fort Lauderdale one of the most desirable location spots in North America. Since ridding itself of spring break in 1986, Fort Lauderdale has redefined itself as an exciting vital destination, all in a sophisticated setting far from big city troubles.

  Beaches

Along the stretch once known as the Fort Lauderdale strip is a new US$36 million pedestrian promenade, a favourite spot for joggers, cyclist, skaters and those taking a scenic or romantic stroll. Cross through the wave-crest gateways and you're standing on one of the world's most famous beaches. Here the warm blue waters of the Atlantic beckon. Dive through the rolling surf, rent a sailboat, go for a parasail or just soak up some of those golden Fort Lauderdale rays.

  Sports

There aren't many sports you can't jump or dive or swim right into. Hooked on fishing? Deep-sea fishing is a world-class, and Fort Lauderdale has the tournaments to prove it. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also favourite pastimes. Beyond the ocean inlet, divers will find clear water and coral formations as elaborate and spectacular as those in the fabled Florida Keys. Even more exciting is Fort Lauderdale's artificial reef programme, which has essentially reforested the sea. When a wreck is sunk, coral growth begins almost immediately, and fish follow quickly thereafter.

From tennis to golf the choice of where to play is the only question. Fort Lauderdale has more than 200 public and private courts and courses. You'll find well-trapped, well watered courses, including one with a world-famous par-three waterfall.

South Florida comes alive as the sports centre of the Southeast. This is one of only four areas in the nation to serve as home to pro football, baseball, basketball and hockey franchises. The area is also home to pro soccer, baseball spring training and more.
