There’s no question that we’re living in a celebrity-obsessed culture. Entertainment TV breathlessly chronicles every move of the days’ top celebrities, of which there are endless supplies, including detailed information on their personal lives to an apparently insatiable audience.
When David O. Russell wanted to recreate New York of the late 70s and early 80s for his new film American Hustle, he knew what to do: call Judy Becker. The Manhattan-based production designer had collaborated with him on The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, bagging an Art Directors Guild Award nomination for the former. Other credits on her CV include Brokeback Mountain and I'm Not There; and her work on HBO's Girls earned her an Art Directors ...

BUFF Tidings! And what a great time of the year it is to be at the pictures. Christmas round the corner, Oscar-bait movies ten-a-penny, what’s not to like? Digital distribution perhaps? We’ll save that for next month’s blog. At the time of writing, yours truly will be in attendance at a pre-Christmas preview screening of ’12 Years A Slave’ – it’s one of the perks of running a film festival though one could say the same thing about this month’s gu...

The first utterances you hear in Woody Allen's latest picture, Blue Jasmine, come from a manic First Class passenger who blabs on and on about herself. That passenger is title
character Jasmine, whose marriage to Madoff avatar Hal (Alec Baldwin) is now as finished as her 1% coffers, and who's going nowhere fast.
She's also played by Cate Blanchett, which helps explain why we not only put up with her snobbish affectations, we can't g...
The elevator pitch for The Book Thief isn't exactly grabby: the story takes place in Nazi Germany; it's narrated by Death; and almost everyone gets killed in the end. Yet both the bestselling novel and its screen adaptation have that certain ich weiss nicht that keeps people coming back for more.
For director Brian Percival (Downton Abbey), the uncommon choice of narrator was one of the main elements that drew him to the project, as he recently tol...

In 1970, I was a young actor living in New York city and everyone was excited about this book, The Godfather by Mario Puzo. I started to sit down and transcribe the interview with Lee Daniels, Cuba Gooding, Jr and Yaya Alafia Q&A style, but it was so lively, you need to hear it. We'd ask a question which would take Lee & Cuba off on great tangents. Plus a transcription doesn't capture the camaraderie between the Precious director and the actors he respects and enjoys so much.
So here's a video of the audio -

Harry Dean Stanton : Partly Fiction, a documentary
By Ron Gilbert
One of the additional joys after viewing this film was having Harry Dean in person performing a few musical sets which could have gone on for hours because no one wanted him to stop. He always says, “It is what it is. Everything just is.” Just put that in your mind and it will help you into the insight to this fascinating documentary. Swiss director Sophie Huber, who met Harry 20 years ago, discussed with us how it...
