KHAMOSH PANI (SILENT WATERS), directed by Sabiha Sumar - Pakistan/France/Germany
Finely crafted with great sensitivity, this film celebrates how religion grows human life in community (as personified by the two women Aicha and Zoubida) and also shows how religion can be used to show division and fear, messages of great importance and urgency for our contemporary world.
The FICC Jury
(International Federation of Cinema Clubs) comprised of Leila Amacker (SWITZERLAND) Maretta Dillon (Ireland), Serafino Fasulo (Italy), gives the DON QUIJOTE Prize to:
The IFFS jury has unanimously decided to give the Don Quijote prize to BOM, YEOREUM, GAEUL, GYEOWOOL, GEURIGO, BOM directed by KIM Ki-duk for its tender and subtle humour, its universal appeal and its particular visual style. Throughout the film the changing seasons of the countryside mirror the lives of the characters. The audience also travels the same path and the film brings a lightness of touch to the dilemmas of the various characters that is wholly convincing. Although the film is set in one place, the characters exist as fully rounded human beings with a past but also importantly, a future.
A Special Mention is given to LES MARINS PERDUS directed by Claire Devers for the particularly convincing world brought to life by the director. This atmospheric tale of sailors stranded on land and forced to confront the decisions of their lives is sympathetically treated and non-judgemental in its approach. Their personal histories are full of regret, sorrow and loss but the film offers hope in the characters resolution and accepts that new beginnings are possible.
A Special Mention is given to KHAMOSH PANI (SILENT WATER) directed by Sabiha Sumar for this fully realised and developed story, which, has both historical and contemporary references. This illuminating glimpse into a part of Pakistan’s history tells us much about the beginnings of Islamic fundamentalism in the late 1970s among young people. The place of women and how their destinies often exist outside themselves is examined with great sympathy. The courage of the main character as she faces difficult choices and the sacrifices she makes at different points in her life is very touching and effecting.
