After the many disappointments at this year's Cannes festival, and memories of
8 ½ Women, Peter Greenaway's recent aberration, expectations were not high for his latest offering. But it proved serendipidous, at least for those audiences who are prepared to jettison their notions of conventional narrative. Like Jean-Luc Godard, whose approach to film Greenaway plainly admires, the British director believes in going beyond the restrictions of cinema, creating an intertextual world which draws heavily on the other arts and other media.
