Winchester Films' new film, Scorched, made its debut at the Cannes Market
yesterday. Following the premier, stars made there way down to the Majestic
Beach where a party was held to celebrate the event. The film's star, Rachel
Leigh Cook, mingled with Scorched director Gavin Grawer, and fellow celebrities
Melissa Joan Hart and Treat Williams. Guests were treated with bottles of "sparkling
vodka" adorned with the film's logo and a feast of American-themed snacks.
Pierce Brosnan appeared on the Croisette beaches yesterday before attending
last night's bash held by MTV to honor the 40th anniversary of James Bond. The
invite-only party was held at fashion icon Pierre Cardin's private villa that
overlooks the Côte d'Azur.
Since the premier of Mike Leigh's latest project, All or Nothing, critics
continue to shower the production with praise. The director received a three-minute
standing ovation after Friday evening's screening of the film and remained in
Cannes yesterday with the All or Nothing cast. Timothy Spall's performance
in the picture is getting considerable attention from his industry peers. Success
in Cannes, however, is familiar territory for Leigh, who previously has won
the Palme d'Or at the festival for 1996's Secrets & Lies.
Bollywood's most recent contribution to the cinematic world is becoming one
of the hottest tickets here in Cannes. According to Screen International, Devdas
is being slated as a cross between Shakespeare in Love and Moulin
Rouge and is rumored to be one of India's most expensive film projects to
date. The film is set for commercial release this summer.
City of God, Brazil's latest film export, was exhibited yesterday in
Cannes to rave reviews. Adapted from the Paulo Linds novel, director Fernando
Meirelles delivers a gritty portrayal of violence and crime in Rio de Janeiro.
The film is a selection in this year's Official Competition.
Alliance Atlantis hosted a recent event attended by documentary director Michael
Moore and several film industry executives. In addition to the considerable
buzz surrounding his new film, the Bowling for Columbine director was
present to celebrate his film's acquisition by United Artists for US distribution.
The informal dinner was held on the beach under open-air tents.
Benefiting from a new trend in cinematic "non-fiction," Italy's new
documentary, Bella Ciao, is receiving early acclaim for its exploration
into the events of the July 2001 G8 summit. The film was exhibited yesterday
at a Critics Week special screening, and according to Variety, has been all
but banned in Italy creating scores of controversy.
