Winchester Films' new film, Scorched, made its debut at the Cannes Market yesterday. Following the premier, stars made there way down to the Majestic Beach where a party was held to celebrate the event. The film's star, Rachel Leigh Cook, mingled with Scorched director Gavin Grawer, and fellow celebrities Melissa Joan Hart and Treat Williams. Guests were treated with bottles of "sparkling vodka" adorned with the film's logo and a feast of American-themed snacks.

Pierce Brosnan appeared on the Croisette beaches yesterday before attending last night's bash held by MTV to honor the 40th anniversary of James Bond. The invite-only party was held at fashion icon Pierre Cardin's private villa that overlooks the Côte d'Azur.

Since the premier of Mike Leigh's latest project, All or Nothing, critics continue to shower the production with praise. The director received a three-minute standing ovation after Friday evening's screening of the film and remained in Cannes yesterday with the All or Nothing cast. Timothy Spall's performance in the picture is getting considerable attention from his industry peers. Success in Cannes, however, is familiar territory for Leigh, who previously has won the Palme d'Or at the festival for 1996's Secrets & Lies.

Bollywood's most recent contribution to the cinematic world is becoming one of the hottest tickets here in Cannes. According to Screen International, Devdas is being slated as a cross between Shakespeare in Love and Moulin Rouge and is rumored to be one of India's most expensive film projects to date. The film is set for commercial release this summer.

City of God, Brazil's latest film export, was exhibited yesterday in Cannes to rave reviews. Adapted from the Paulo Linds novel, director Fernando Meirelles delivers a gritty portrayal of violence and crime in Rio de Janeiro. The film is a selection in this year's Official Competition.

Alliance Atlantis hosted a recent event attended by documentary director Michael Moore and several film industry executives. In addition to the considerable buzz surrounding his new film, the Bowling for Columbine director was present to celebrate his film's acquisition by United Artists for US distribution. The informal dinner was held on the beach under open-air tents.

Benefiting from a new trend in cinematic "non-fiction," Italy's new documentary, Bella Ciao, is receiving early acclaim for its exploration into the events of the July 2001 G8 summit. The film was exhibited yesterday at a Critics Week special screening, and according to Variety, has been all but banned in Italy creating scores of controversy.
