| The Cannes Film Festival is the most important event of the year for the film industry. It is where 50% of the industry’s business is concluded annually. From the glitter and the glamour of the stars, the films and directors rising to glory or the latest deals in the film market, The Film Festivals Server has been providing day-by-day coverage of Cannes since 1995 in collaboration with Moving Pictures. And Moving Pictures magazine has been a major film industry source of festivals and film market information for the past ten years. | ||
| David Cronenberg is heading the jury for the 52nd edition. The line-up includes the latest film from David Lynch -The Straight Story, Takeshi Kitano’s Kikujiro No Natsu, Pola X by Leos Carax, John Sayles' Limbo, Jim Jarmush’s Ghost Dog: The Way of the Smourai, Michael Winterbottom's Wonderland... a total of 22 films in competition and 7 out of competition. | ||

Who could ever forget Roberto Benigni picking up jury president Martin Scorsese and dancing about as he came forward for his Grand Jury Prix. In fact, both Benigni’s Life is Beautiful and Eric Zonca’s The Dreamlife of Angels (Best Actress) were first awarded at Cannes and went on to win other prizes at the European Film Awards 98 and the Césars 99 spending a full year in the spotlight. |

| Cannes celebrated its 50th edition by inviting all the past winners to join the exceptional celebration. The city was ablaze with stars. For the occasion, the Palme of Palmes was voted by all the past Palme D’or winners to go to Swedish director Igmar Berman. With Jeanne Moreau presiding and Isabelle Adjani heading the jury, this year’s winners came from the four corners of the globe including a 50th Anniversary Prize to Youssef Chaine for The Destiny and the entirety of his work. | ||
| It was a very European year awarding purity in filmmaking with Mike Leigh’s Secret & Lies winning the Palm D’or and Best Actress and Denmark’s Dogma 95 entry of Breaking the Waves receiving the Grand Prix. France added a remarkable documentary –Microcosmos - that won the Technical Grand Prize. North America broke the European spell with the Coen brothers winning Best Director for Fargo and David Cronenberg’s Crash the Jury Special Prize. | ||
| The Film Festivals Server was founded and took its first breaths this year. Notably it was appointed the first official Cannes Festival web site. That was the year that Emir Kusturica took the Palm D’or for his film Underground. | ||
