Twenty-two films were selected for screening in the Certain Regard section, which includes 6 first-time directors vying for the Camera d'Or and a total of fourteen never before selected for an official Cannes screening. For promising new talent, the Certain regard section is the the springboard to a future film in the official competition. This is the case for two past Certain Regard directors, Samira Makhmalbaf and Neil LaBute, both presenting in the offical selection this year.
