In
its 31st year, this sidebar was an outgrowth of the May 1968 events
in France billed as a fortnight (quinzaine) for directors (realisateurs).
The line-up for the year 2000 edition was announced on 26 April. Marie-Pierre
Macias, head of the section, revealed the 24 features culled from
among the 964 films submitted. Eleven are first films in the running
for the Camera d'Or and almost all the films are world or international
premiers. Another 11 short and medium-length films, culled from amongst
the 474 films submitted, are to accompany the features, as well as
a special section entitled "en avant" proposing another 17 shorts
"to be discovered."
France is well represented with seven features, seven additional films
from Europe and a couple from Eastern Europe. Asia's representation
has decreased this year with one film from Japan and one from Korea.
The US has three films in the selection.
Directors' Fortnight is paying homage to the recently deceased Robert
Bresson, screening an interview with him on opening night. The opening
film on 11 May is French Claude Mouriéras' Tout va bien, on
s'en va. UK Stephen Daldry's Dancer will close
the section on 19 May. One other treat the section is offering is
journalist Malou von Sivers interview with Ingmar Bergman and Erland
Josephson made for Sweden's TV4, one of the few interviews granted
by the Swedish master who insisted that his actor-friend Erland Josephson
be present. |

Marie-Pierre
Macias
This
is her second year in charge of the selection, which she shares
with Jacques Gerber and Christine Ravet. Her ideal reason
for selecting a film: "un coup de coeur", the process
of falling in love with a film. "Every time you see something
that's really good, your faith and hope are reborn. It happens
all the time. My only real fear is of not spotting a film
that's of superior quality."
