Entrance to Cannes

Palme d'Or

Dancer in the Dark

In a ceremony free of commercial breaks and long-winded speeches, Virginie Ledoyen and Jury President Luc Besson presented the 53rd Palme d'Or Awards with the top prize going to Lars Von Trier for Dancer in the Dark. Von Trier couldn't have been more at home as his leading lady, Bjork, took the Best Actress award and he himself the Palme D'or from the hands of presenter Catherine Deneuve, who also starred in the film.

This year's Cannes might very well have been the "Year of Iran," as it was this country's film industry that sashayed away from the red carpet with three official prizes. Two Iranians shared the Camera d'Or (the award to first time filmmakers): Zamani baraye masti ashba from Bahman Ghobadi and Djomeh from Hassan Yektapanah; while the jury prize went to Samira Makhmalbaf for her film Blackboards. Samira won the hearts of journalists and cinephiles alike with her humble interviews, gracious gesturing, and refusal to join in the vanity strut -- she was visible from meters away by the traditional headscarf she wore throughout the festival.
