The
Cannes question is a difficult one. The media coverage is nearly
equal to that of Sundance. The main events of the festival might
get a sound bite or two on network television and a single feature
in the weekend arts section of the regional newspaper. However,
traditionally the focus has been on Hollywood stars and the glitter
in attendance. Coverage and pictures tend to lean more towards the
Academy Awards approach of "Who wore what?".
The perception amongst filmmakers is quite different. Here, it is
a "European thing". By that I mean that it has a reputation for
being more artistically prestigious and sophisticated, but not commercially
relevant to American filmmakers. The more savvy American independent
understands that the key to selling to European distributors is
showing at Cannes, but it is not considered the golden ring that
Sundance is.
