| What I really like to do is stay home and watch sitcoms on TV,"
said Island, Alicia director Ken Yunome. It's not the kind of self-assessment
expected from a man whose debut feature is based on the Marquis de Sade's
Eugenie de Franval, 20th century literature, art and, well, American sitcoms.
Given the low-budgeted accomplishment of Island, Alicia, chances are that
Yunome's sitcom-watching hours will be limited in the future.
The highly atmospheric drama is set on Staten Island, one of New York City's five boroughs, and takes place almost entirely within the confines of one house. A young man falls in love with a much older woman he meets in a bar. The two eventually spend a passionate weekend together, but when he returns to the house the next day, he finds her dead. He meets Alicia, her estranged teenage daughter who had been living with her father until his recent death. United by their sense of loss, the two begin a sexual relationship that swings from youthful passion to emotional pain. Like many works by first-time directors, this is a work of passion, not one motivated by business acumen. Nor was it a project that the on-screen talent felt immediately comfortable with. The first actress chosen to play the sexually charged role of Alicia backed out when her boyfriend objected to the explicitness of the script. Jane Jepson, who finally took the role, also had some weak moments. Actress Cheryl Aden, who plays the older lover, was similarly concerned
when she arrived for rehearsal. "I had to keep reminding myself 'I'm here
because it's a great script," she told Moving Pictures.
