| Critics' Week Closes Today | |
| The festival is winding down as the last days approach and the crowds thin down. Critics’ Week closes today with the New Zealand film Memory and Desire by Niki Caro, which the director describes as a love triangle with a difference that he wrote when he was 28 years old. | ![]() |

Handled by Goldwyn Films, the film stars Yuri Kinugawa (above) in a drama about a Japanese couple who elope to New Zealand. Sales are being snatched up by Hungary, Singapore and Israel followed by five European countries and South Africa. Dannish filmmaker Lars van Trier’s competition film The Idiots has received a 12 year old restricted viewing because of the non-simulated sex scenes performed by porn stars during a very tiny sequence. Van Trier arrived in Cannes for the screening in a camping car; he hates planes. Van Trier is one of the founders of Dogma 95 which requires that the filmmakers abide by the rule that sound and picture must not be produced separately, creating films that have soundtracks of real-time recordings. In the film, a community of a dozen people literally play idiots. Will jury president Matin Scorsese, who is looking for original way to tell a story at this festival edition, be seduced? On the market side, Matt Dillon has announced his first shot at directing with the film City of Ghosts. The film tells the story of a convict - to be played by Dillon himself - who is forced to escape the US, seeks refuge through a spiritual initiation in Thailand and Cambodia. It should roll this autumn in New York and Southeast Asia. |

The important rendezvous of the day was the William Morris Talent Agency 100th anniversary celebration held at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes, the hotel preferred by the superstars. A lush meal terminated at the bar where such stars as Sharon Stone, Brooke Shield, Ray Fines, Wyona Ryder and John Hurt seemed to be having a rollicking good time. The next headline party will be the Godzilla event. |
