| IFM makes it third time lucky | |
| At its third Cannes market out-ing, IFM Film Associates has expanded
its feature catalogue from three in 1996 to 47 this year, and lifted its
profits from mid six figures to over $1 million on rising turnover, reports
IFM's president Antony I Ginnane. It has four new features to pre-sell
at this market, two of them written by Australian Vince Monton, who scripted
IFM's highly successful Black Light.
The company's sales activity accounts for some 75% of its business, the balance coming from its role as executive producer. Ginnane is based at IFM's Los Angeles offices, while Ann Lyons operates from the company's Melbourne office. Dreamtime, one of the four new titles at this market, reunites Monton with the Black Light team of producer David Doerksen and director Michael Storey, and will begin shooting in September in Saskatoon. The action thriller centres on a Femme Nikita-style woman framed by her ex-lover and jailed for six years. She comes out wanting revenge. Monton also wrote the script for Orbit, about a serial killer aboard an experimental space station, which will be directed by Eli Necakov and starts shooting in Toronto next month. A month later, also in Toronto, producer/director Robert Bergman begins shooting from his own script of Brilliant, a mystery thriller set in a university teaching hospital when a brilliant female post-grad student finds a week of her life – and a week of her memory – has been 'stolen'. The fourth new title through IFM is You Make Me Nervous, a teenage romance written by Sam Wendel, a Canadian/New Zealand co-production to be directed by a New Zealand filmmaker, to be signed shortly. Of its 47 titles, 12 were acquired last year when IFM picked up the library from the UK's Liberty Films; and five are Australian features. As executive producer, IFM is involved with the family film, Sally Marshall Is Not An Alien, which is in post production. Produced by Terry Charatsis and made with the South Australian Film Corporation, it serves as a model for James' Garden, a new project written by South Australian Miki Mikalopoulos, due to start shooting early next year, a co-production between the SAFC and Alegro of Canada.
