Swedish filmmaker to receive Palme of Palmes

Veteran Swedish helmer Ingmar Bergman (78) is expected to receive the special Palme of Palmes which will be given on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Cannes International Film Festival on 11 May.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether Bergman will actually be in Cannes to receive the honorary award at a ceremony likely to be attended by French president Jacques Chirac.

The Palme of Palmes was voted by all surviving winners of the Palme d'Or, and is designed to pay tribute to a filmmaker whose films have competed in the past without obtaining the recognition they deserved.

In the past, Bergman had a number of films in Cannes such as A Ship Bound for India, Smiles of a Summer Night, The Seventh Seal and The Virgin Spring.
