THURSDAY 9 MAY

And how was your flight?

And you thought you had problems getting to Cannes Mort Segal, vice-chairman of DDA, took over three days to fly from LA to Cannes after experiencing a few problems in St Louis where he was making a connection. Unfortunately, two planes collided on the airport apron, leaving Segal stranded for over 24 hours. But all's-well-that-ends-well and Segal landed safely on Tuesday, clutching the exclusive news releases that were so eagerly awaited by editors along the Croisette.

Something to remember us by

This year's Moving Pictures' Cannes Cuckoo Award for being first through the door with a market freebie (and there's nothing a journalist likes more than a freebie) goes to Trans Atlantic Entertainment.

In fact, Rena Ronson, senior vice-president for international sales at Trans Atlantic, managed to get hers over to US Editor Chris Pickard before he had even left for LAX to get his flight to Europe. And the freebies?

A limited-edition 3D brooch of Pinhead to support Hellraiser IV: Bloodline, and a miniature set of handcuffs, part of the campaign for Alex Graves' new thriller Casualties. They sound like perfect accessories for the Moving Pictures party, in fact.

Caine shows he's still able

michael Caine, an actor who always seems to be in search of a good role, goes back to the location of his first hit for his latest movie. Where once he fought off the Zulu hordes alongside Stanley Baker at Rorke's Drift in Zulu, more than 30 years later he is to star as former South African president F.W. De Klerk opposite Sidney Poitier's ANC leader Nelson Mandela in Joseph Sargent's One Man, One Vote, which is being produced for Showtime in association with Hallmark Entertainment. The film is currently shooting in South Africa and it focuses on the negotiations that led to majority rule. And not a lot of people know that...

Moving Pictures and Soho House set to pop a few corks in bay of Cannes

Champagne corks were popping in London's Soho last Friday as the final convoy of supplies for the Moving Pictures/Soho House private members club left for Cannes. When Soho House Führer Nick Jones (pictured centre) noted that his London club was empty during the month of May last year, he got together with the Moving Pictures habitués of the club and decided to bring Mahomet to the mountain. Thus the 120ft La Venetia will be moored near the Majestic Jetty (or in the event of inclement weather, in the Old Port), with a 24-hour restaurant, banqueting facilities, water sports and so on for members and sponsors, who this year include KPMG, Goldcrest, Bravo and The Prague International Film Festival. Should the boat not sink, this first co-venture between Soho House and Moving Pictures will be extended to future film and television events throughout the rest of the year.

Buyers beware! Who is that girl standing next to you in the bar? Entrapment agencies use young, attractive women to set up unfaithful men. The first agency was started in New York a year ago by a couple of ex-NYPD detectives. They now operate in London... That's the subject of the new film that Winchester Film and Television Sales are pre-selling at Cannes this year.

To demonstrate the effectiveness of entrapment agencies, Winchester has enlisted 20 anonymous, beautiful women to 'entrap' male participants at the festival. The women will be staking out the most popular meeting places of industry movers and shakers, including the Majestic, Carlton and Martinez hotels. The results of the 'operation' will be collated and held in a confidential file or at least, for the time being. Watch this space for further details, and perhaps even a double-page photo spread

THURSDAY 9 MAY

Aries (21 March-19 April) You are the pioneering type and hold most people in contempt. You are quick-tempered, impatient and scornful of advice. You are not a very nice person.

TODAY: You are likely to be thrown out of a cinema - screenings haven't started yet. It won't help to call the French security people 'fascist pigs'. (You will probably ignore this - but we tried.)

Bashing the Bishop

How unfortunate that En brazos de la mujer madura, the latest production by Andrés Vicente Gómez and Sogetel, starring Faye Dunaway and Joanna Pacula, has incurred the wrath of the Catholic church. The Bishop of Teruel and Albarracín has banned location shooting in the local hermitage because he has declared the film, based on the Stephen Vizinczey bestseller, to be immoral. The cast and crew will now move to another location, much to the indignation of director Manuel Lombadero, who has described the Bishop's views as "straight out of the 19th century".

To see what is regarded as an ecumenically-correct film, he should have consulted the list published by the Vatican earlier this year of the Roman Catholic church's all-time top 45 titles, designed to encourage Catholics to be discriminating viewers. The list is split into three categories: Art, Religion and Values. In Cannes, the producers of Crash, Trainspotting and Camping Cosmos are still eagerly waiting to hear if they pass muster.
Art: Citizen Kane; Fantasia; Il gattopardo; Le grande illusion; The Lavender Hill Mob; Little Women; Metropolis; Modern Times; Napoleon; Nosferatu; Otto e Mezzo; Stagecoach; La strada; 2001: A Space Odyssey; The Wizard of Oz.

Religion: Andrei Roublev; Babette's Feast; Ben Hur; Francesco Francesco, Giullare di dio; A Man For All Seasons; The Mission; Monsieur Vincent; Nazarin; Ordet; La passion de Jeanne d'Arc; Le passion pathe; Sacrificio; Therese; Il vangelo secondo matteo.

Values: L'albero degli zoccoli; Au revoir les enfants; Biruma no tategoto; Chariots of Fire; Il decalog; Det sjunde inselglet; Dersu uzala; Gandhi; Intolerance; It's a Wonderful Life; Ladri di biciclette; On the Waterfront; Roma citta aperta; Schindler's List; Smultronstallet; Showgirls (check this one, Ed).

Harvey Weinstein takes a bow

Miramax heavyweight Harvey Weinstein will be making his onscreen debut during Cannes in a support role alongside Sam Neill in a film to be screened for invited guests on Wednesday 15 May at 20.00. Anonymously directed by Peter Jackson, the film is a controversial factodrama. See tomorrow's issue of Moving Pictures for the full story.

Knickers down on Croisette

Knickers came down on the Croisette on Wednesday night. A poster for Bigas Luna's saucy comedy Bambola depicting a pair of lacy black briefs was wrongly erected outside the Majestic Hotel. The Bishop of Teruel and Albarracín will be very pleased to hear that it has now been replaced by one for TSC's movie Drive, featuring a big car.

More knickers, this time of the Calvin Klein variety, were in evidence on the plage last night at the rave following the screening of Universal's Fear, which stars CK MAW (model/actor/whatever) 'Marky' Mark Wahlberg. And with next week's MTV party invite stipulating a dress code of "black tie, no knickers", it's obviously going to be one of those years.
