Sights set on the leopard

Locarno's Palazzetto Fevi is a showcase for innovative cinema and fresh talent: it includes
16 first or second features, and four films by new directors selected for their world premières

For the competition at Locarno, festival director Marco Müller and his predecessor David Streiff have constantly looked for innovative cinema and fresh talent. Over the last decade, the festival has contributed to the international recognition of such directors as Spike Lee, Abbas Kiarostami, Jim Jarmusch, Terence Davies and Chen Kaige.
This year 16 first or second features and four films by new directors from around the world will unspool between 3-13 August at Locarno's Palazzetto Fevi, a 3,400-seat auditorium where a dozen seats are reserved for the international jury awarding the festival prizes.
The Golden Leopard - the festival grand prix - is accompanied by CHF 30,000, with CHF 15,000 for the Silver Leopard (The Special Jury Prize) and CHF 5,000 for the Bronze Leopard. Special prizes include the Swissair/Crossair award, worth CHF 10,000.
Iranian director Ebrahim Foruzesh, the 1994 gold winner for Khomreh (The Jar), will be on his second visit to Locarno as a member of the 1995 jury, to be joined by colleagues Atom Egoyan (Canada), and Charles Burnett (USA).
Also on the jury are French actress Bernadette Lafont, Italian producer Alfredo Bini, Swiss artist Sylvie Fleury, American writer Edmund White, and Greek artist Iannis Kounnellis.
