Alexandre Larine, artiste célèbre, ex-citoyen soviétique vivant aux États-Unis, rentre en Russie. Il vient voir Macha Bersenieva, une belle jeune femme qu'il a connue enfant. A l'époque, il devait épouser sa mère, Anna. Mais tombant amoureux de sa fille, Larine s'effraie de cet amour honteux et finit par trahir les deux femmes. Six ans plus tard. Anna a épousé un riche hommes d'affaires russe. Macha est fiancée. L'arrivé de Larine détruit la vie étrange, douloureuse mais néanmoins stable de la mère et de la fille. La visite de Larine est une tentative désespérée de revenir dans un pays qui n'existe plus, à un amour qui a disparu. Son passé le dépasse et devient une punition. Alexandre Larin, famous artist, former Soviet citizen, comes back from the USA to Russia. He comes to see Masha Bersenjeva, a young beautiful woman whom he knew when she was a child. At the time he was going to marry her mother Anna, but falling in love with the daughter, Larin got frightened of sinful love and betrayed both women. Six years have passed. Anna married a rich Russian business man. Masha is engaged. Larin's appearance destroys the strange, painful but stable life of the mother and daughter. Larin's visit is a hopeless attempt to come back to the country which does not exist, to love which has vanished. The past overtakes him as punishment. Six years ago Larin betrayed not so much his love as himself. Antipode to Larin is Mitja, Masha's fiancée, a young man who stands up to his right for freedom and independence and defends his values and principles.
