Laura Bowman, jeune médecin américain, a renoncé à sa pratique après le meurtre de son mari et de son fils. Coupée du monde, obstinément repliée sur sa douleur, elle a trouvé refuge auprès de sa soeur a"née, Andy, qui s'efforce depuis plusieurs mois de lui redonner le gožt de vivre. En voyage touristique à travers l'Asie du sud-est, les deux soeurs font halte à Rangoon, capitale de la Birmanie. Bravant le couvre-feu instauré par la junte, Laura quitte subrepticement son hôtel à la tombée de la nuit et s'aventure dans les rues, intriguée par une sourde et lointaine rumeur. Elle se retrouve bientot au milieu d'un flot de manifestants agitant pacifiquement drapeaux rouges et bannières à l'effigie de la femme la plus populaire du pays, Aung San Suu Kyi, leader du mouvement démocratique.
Laura Bowman travels to the Far East to escape the memory of the brutal murders of her husband and young son. Neither the beautiful countryside not the kindness of the native people affect Laura's depression and emotional numbness. While travelling in Burma, with her sister Andy, laura becomes aware of the nascent democratic moment in the country and its brutal repression by a military junta. Venturing from her hotel late at night and against the government - imposed curfew, Laura witnesses a student protest led by Aung San Suu Kyi, the symbol of the country's peaceful defiance of the totalitarian government.
