Un vieux cargo, appartenant à une compagnie maritime qui vient de faire faillite, arrive en rade de Hong Kong. L'équipage devra attendre une semaine, peut-être plus, qu'il soit décidé de leur sort. Parmi ces quelques marins, il y a Nikos le radio grec, opiomane, solitaire, blessé au fond du coeur, de l'âme, au bord du gouffre. Et Li, une enfant chinoise vivant sur un sampan, travaillant en nettoyant les bateaux le temps de leur escale. C'est la rencontre d'un homme perdu et d'une enfant qui aurait pu l'être mais qui demeure lumineuse grâce à son innocence, sa sagesse, sa foi et sa force tenace face à la vie brutale. Histoire fragile, opaque et transparente comme la lumière de la baie de Hong Kong, faite de silences, d'attentes, de douleurs et d'éblouissements.
An old freighter, belonging to a company that has gone out of business drops anchor off Hong Kong. The crew aboard has to wait a week, or more, to get paid. After that, who knows what lies ahead? Among the sailors there is Nikos, a radio operator, a man of few words, weary of life, an introvert and opium addict, and Li, a little Chinese girl living on the sampans in the bay of Hong Kong, doing cleaning work on the ships while they're in port. It is the friendship that arises between this lost man and a bright little girl who won't herself be defeated, who keeps her innocence in spite of the chaos in her life.
