Statement
Moving Pictures
Magazine (MPM) is committed to bringing the best film news and commentary
to its readers. By hosting our Short Film Contests, we hope to forge relationships
with talented young filmmakers, providing them with contacts and a platform
to show their work.
• We seek quality short films 15 minutes or less
• Three Categories - Animation, Documentary and Narrative
• DVD or VHS viewing samples accepted
Moving Pictures Magazine has been bringing “The Stories Behind the
Movies” for almost two decades, with a particular focus on the art
and societal impact of film. Moving Pictures is the pre-eminent film festival
magazine and partner, working with more than 20 film festivals and markets
each year. Our short film contests continue our commitment to fostering
the art of dynamic filmmaking, by providing our short film contest winners
with unparalleled access to the world’s best festivals, award-winning
judges, Moving Pictures VIP festival events, distribution opportunities
and exposure. Moving Pictures uses its considerable connections and media
outlets to help talented filmmakers get their film and message to a wide
and influential audience.
About the Contest:
Moving Pictures is looking for quality films that fall within one of the
following genres:
Narrative
Documentary
Animation
(Please note that “mockumentaries” will be considered within
the Narrative category.)
The film should also be: 15
minutes or less in length
In English or have English subtitles if shot in another language
Provided Digitally
Accompanied by a short letter or essay explaining the social context and
purpose of the film. (This is used to assess the social message of the
film, not to critique the filmmaker’s ability to write.)
Winners of the Spring 2007 Moving Pictures Magazine Short Film Contest
are provided:
the opportunity to be flown and housed in the South of France.
special recognition within the Moving Pictures program at the Cannes Short
Film Corner. The three winners will comprise the Moving Pictures Program
at the Short Film Corner in Cannes.
special screening in the Palais.
an exclusive cocktail party honoring the winners and showcasing their
films.
The winning films will be promoted:
within the Moving Pictures booth inside the Short Film Corner,
on the Main screen page of the Short Film Corner,
within the Moving Pictures Magazine Cannes Special Issue,
listing within the first pages of the Short Film Corner catalogue,
following the festival in Moving Pictures Magazine.
Selected finalists, Audience Choice and Winners will
receive a one-of-a-kind opportunity to have their short film seen by the
very top talent in the film industry.
Moving Pictures Magazine will run a feature on Cannes, the Short Film
Corner and our short film contest in the August/September 2007 issue.
There will be a special DVD included with this issue of Moving Pictures
Magazine that will contain the winning films and selected finalists. DVD
recipients will include members of such prestigious organizations as The
Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, The Writer’s Guild,
the Director’s Guild of America and the Screen Actor’s Guild.
The magazine is also distributed in all major bookstores (including Barnes
& Noble and Borders) and newsstands within the U.S., and can be found
abroad as well.
The Audience Choice Award - All films that pass the first round of judging
will be uploaded to movingpicturesmagazine.com and will be available to
participate in the Audience Choice Award. The Audience Choice winner will
be the film that receives the highest ratings by the most people. The
Audience Choice winner will receive recognition within Moving Pictures
Magazine and movingpicturesmgazine.com and will be included in the special
DVD distribution.
In an industry where
connections are everything, this is an exciting opportunity for filmmakers
to receive exposure at the world’s biggest film festival and market
and to be able to meet and network with industry insiders.
Earlier this year,
winners of the Fall 2006 Moving Pictures Magazine Short Film Contest were
flown and housed in Park City, Utah, during Sundance and Slamdance Film
Festivals courtesy of Moving Pictures Magazine. The winners were given
access to the Moving Pictures Lounge during the festival and honored at
the Moving Pictures VIP party on opening weekend. Their films were judged
by an esteemed panel of judges that has 17 Academy Award Nominations among
them, and many other notable honors and awards. The judges have also been
available to answer questions and provide guidance to the winners. To

is April 16, 2007 and regular deadline is May 11, 2007 May.
