Goodbye to Language 3D Jean-Luc Godard \| France Winner of the Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the new film by Jean-Luc Godard is a visually sumptuous and richly complex meditation on history and eternity, being and nothingness, desire and death. Hill of Freedom Hong Sang-soo \| South Korea South Korean master Hong Sang-soo crafts yet another delightful, soju-saturated tale of love thwarted, in this story of a heartsick Japanese man who travels to Seoul to attempt a reunion with the woman he still pines for. Leviathan Andrey Zvyaginstev \| Russia Lauded Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return) won the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes for this painterly, primordial tale about a proud patriarch fighting to protect his family home from a corrupt local official. Murder in Pacot Raoul Peck \| Haiti/France/Norway In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, a middle-aged Port-au-Prince couple come face to face with the stark contradictions of Haitian society when they are forced to rent out their villa to a foreign aid worker and his enterprising local girlfriend. A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence Roy Andersson \| Sweden/Norway/France/Germany Swedish master Roy Andersson (Songs from the Second Floor) returns with this absurdist, surrealistic and shocking pitch-black comedy, which moves freely from nightmare to fantasy to hilariously deadpan humour as it muses on man’s perpetual inhumanity to man. Timbuktu Abderrahmane Sissako \| France/Mauritania/Mali Following the recent jihadist takeover of northern Mali, a proud cattle herder comes into fateful conflict with the fundamentalist rulers of the provincial capital, in this luminous, lyrical and poetic drama from the great African filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako. Trick or Treaty? Alanis Obomsawin \| Canada Legendary Canadian documentarian Alanis Obomsawin digs into the tangled history of Treaty 9 — the infamous 1905 agreement wherein First Nations communities allegedly relinquished sovereignty over their traditional territories — to reveal the deceptions and distortions which "the real agreement" has been subjected to by successive governments seeking to deprive Canada’s First Peoples of their lands and rights.
