New image new posters for the 64th edition of San Sebastian Film Festival

A poster portraying the San Sebastian Festival as a meeting point is the image of the 64th edition

Its author is San Sebastian designer Jorge Elósegui, from Estudio Primo

boletin_653_1.jpg

The Newton Auditorium at the Eureka! Zientzia Museoa was the setting for presentation of the new image for the 64th edition of the San Sebastian Festival. For the first time, ten prestigious studios were invited to create the Official Selection poster. The Festival management committee has selected the proposal submitted by Jorge Elósegui, from Estudio Primo, highlighting the idea of the Festival as a meeting point.

“The poster refers to the Festival as a meeting point for industry professionals, journalists and spectators”, described Elósegui. This is a poster which is “colourful, lively yet elegant thanks to the careful use made of the typographies”, with “a strong hand-crafted component”. All of the characters are cut out manually, and the textures and doodles generated both for the figures and for the background endeavour to make the image “richer, more organised and dynamic”. One of the creator’s intentions was to promote connection between the poster and the other applications, particularly the header screened prior to the films which, as a spectator, he believes to be “the most magical moment” of the Festival. “It is interesting for the poster and the header to support one another in order to create something powerful from the graphic and communicative point of view”, the author explained.

Estudio Primo is a spin-off of San Sebastian’s Primo collective which, since its foundation in 2002, has been dedicated to publishing records and fanzines while organising exhibitions and fiestas, among other activities. In recent years, Elósegui has created the posters for festivals running in the city, such as Surfilm and Dock of the Bay.

The meeting also included display of the winning proposals of the poster competition called by the Festival for the New Directors, Horizontes Latinos, Pearls, Zabaltegi-Tabakalera and Culinary Cinema sections. Open to graphic designers all over the world, 482 authors submitted 1,692 proposals for this 4th edition. A jury consisting of the Managing Director of Donostia Kultura, Jaime Otamendi, the Director of the San Sebastian 2016 cultural programme, Xabier Payá, the Deputy Directors of the Festival, Maialen Beloki and Lucía Olaciregui, and the Festival Director, José Luis Rebordinos, chose five posters conceived in La Paz (Bolivia), Estella, Caracas (Venezuela), San Sebastian and Lleida, finding their inspiration in subjects such as the vertigo of doing something those first times, the relationship between technology and passion, the emotion of discovering a gem, the free flight of a bird or the films of Esther Williams.

New Directors: VUELA (fly)

Author: Marco Tóxico

BIOGRAPHY

Marco Antonio Guzmán (La Paz, Bolivia, 1982) has created covers for records, books and magazines, illustrations for press and publications. He designed the official poster of the Montreal International Film Festival in 2014, and last year his poster Tuberías 3 was selected as the official image of the Zabaltegi section.

DESCRIPTION

The poster represents “the vertigo of doing something those first times”. According to the Bolivian artist, chosen as one of the ten best illustrators by the COW International Design Festival, “starting to film, starting to create, has a strong component of leaping into the void and finding out whether or not you can fly”.

Horizontes latinos: UNA MIRADA A TRAVÉS (A look through)

Author: Concepción Domingo Ragel

BIOGRAPHY

Concepción Domingo, a designer from Madrid living in Estella (Navarre), discovered her vocation in 2009, proceeding to launch her professional career under her own label, Inkice, which has earned her awards and acknowledgements at home and abroad.

DESCRIPTION

In the words of the designer, the poster combines “technology”, in the shape of a projector with a turning reel, and “passion”, represented by a woman’s hair. The image contains two visions, reflected by human faces which “envelop the central eye, expression of that critical, passionate and original look at Latin American cinema”.

perlak: CAMPO PERLADO (PEARLY FIELD)

Author: Raxel Andara

BIOGRAPHY

Raxel Osbaldo Andara Graterol is a 19-year-old from Venezuela, winner of three FILA (Festival Imaginario de Las Artes) awards in 2014 and finalist last year in the Ciclo Siete sustainable design competition. He is currently in his fourth semester of studying Social Communication at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Caracas.

DESCRIPTION

Campo perlado evokes in the spectator the impression of having discovered a cinematographic gem. “It endeavours to represent the feeling of observing a cinema pearl in its full splendour, where its well-polished hits and its small but interesting misses come together in a conglomeration of sensations”, he explains.

Zabaltegi-Tabakalera: PÁJARO EN EL CIELO (bird in the sky)

Author: Maite Rosende Gutierrez

BIOGRAPHY

Maite Rosende (San Sebastian, 1991) passed an advanced qualification in Mural Painting before deciding to study illustration and complete her training with graphic design, photography and video editing. Last year, her poster entitled Mi horizonte was chosen as the image of Horizontes Latinos.

DESCRIPTION

For Maite Rosende, Zabaltegi-Tabakalera is a “section open to an enormously wide variety of film proposals, where there are no formal rules or limits in regard to subject matter”, which is why, in this poster, “it is represented with a bird that spreads its wings ready to fly away, free”.

Culinary Zinema: CALEIDOSCOPIO (kaleidoscope)

Author: Antonio Pontí Ibars

BIOGRAPHY

Antoni Pontí Ibars (Lleida, 1966) is a creator specialising in graphic design, photography, art directing and costume design for cinema and advertising. The Catalan artist designed the official poster of the 61st edition (Óptico) and the image of Horizontes Latinos for the 60th edition (Latin City).

DESCRIPTION

The image contains “the movement and rhythm” typical of kitchens, “places of frantic work disciplines”. This concept is represented as “a dance of colours, shapes and flavours”, articulated into patterns taking as their reference “the zenithal figures of Esther Williams’ films”, explained Toni Pontí.

Savage Cinema: INGRAVIDEZ (WEIGHTLESSNES)

Author: Carlos Mauricio

BIOGRAPHY

Savage Cinema, the adventure and action sports film section created in 2013 in collaboration with Red Bull Media House, has as its author the art director and graphic designer from Galicia, Carlos Mauricio (Maurix), who has been creating works for companies and studios all over the world since 1998.

DESCRIPTION

“Going beyond sports challenges, we talk about flying, imagining, about the weightlessness of a very small figure who merges into his environment”, explains the author. The idea is to “remove the distance between the actor/sportsperson and the spectator and open the section to everyone, a section often telling stories of lives that extend beyond exploits to place their actors in scenarios and situations that everyone can identify with”.

Retrospectives

The posters of the classic and thematic retrospectives have been created by the San Sebastian Festival and Eurosíntesis.
The image of The Act of Killing. Cinema and global violence season, which offers a selection of films helping to analyse situations of violence occurring all over the world, takes as its basis a photograph from the film Johnny Mad Dog, directed by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire. For its part, the poster for the retrospective on Jacques Becker, one of the most brilliant links between post-war French cinema and the Nouvelle vague, comes from the shoot of Ali Baba et les quarante voleurs (Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves).

Also presented were the promotional clips of the retrospectives, created by Carlos Rodríguez at Morgan Creativos.
