Ronita TorcatoA little chit, a little chat, a little bit of this & that;meaning news, views & lotsa reviews from an independent journo based in Bombay aka Mumbai BIGGER, BETTER MIFF 2017 PROMISES FEST DIRECTOR & DD BOSSMAN,MUKUL SHARMA
MIFF 2016 Festival Director & Doordarshan head Mukesh Sharma has promised a "bigger, better festival next year" when the under-construction building at the Films Division campus is complete with spacious (2,000 seater) theatres.
The happy annoucement was made Monday,February 1st at the ongoing 14th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival of Documentaries,Shorts and Animations (MIFF) minutes before MIFF Brand Ambassador Jackie Shroff celebrated his birthday with a cake.
Messrs Shroff and Sharma shared the cake-cutting honours in the FD Media centre while media persons sang "Happy Birthday. The Bollywood star spent much of the day attending animation workshops at the Films Division premises, the main hub of the ongoing Fest which is spread out over five venues in Mumbai alone and simultaneously being beamed in ten cities across India for the benefit of film buffs and filmmakers unable to hoof it to Mumbai. ( FD has set up a special Zone, whereby documentary films are being shown in other cities at the same time as MIFF)
"Today, I attended an animation workshop,it's been a rich, learning experience since I never had the time to take in such programs earlier.Tommorrow I will attend a music workshop" said Shroff who declined a journo's query to compare MIFF with IFFI Goa."I love Goa and I love Mumbai.Besides, they're different kind of festivals. It would be great though if MIFF was held annually instead of every other year"
The biennial event organized by the Films Division of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and supported by the Government of Maharashtra,MIFF 2016 is showcasing 30 films in International Competition, including 12 from India. The National competition sees 27 films vying for the Golden Conch Award. The festival will also present special packages from top international documentary film festivals like Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig in Germany and Leiria from Portugal.
The bustling MIFF Hub in FD's sprawling campus is the venue of Master classes, workshops, panel discussions, seminars and IDPA's daily Open Forum. Cash prizes worth Rs 60 lakhs (Rs 6 million) will be distributed to the winners in various categories along with the Golden Conch Awards. Stellar attractions include Rinku Kalsy’s For the Love of a Man on the Rajnikanth cult in South India,Mohammed Ali Naqvi and Hemal Trivedi’s Among the Believers, a documentary about the roots of religious extremism in Pakistan, and Joshua Oppenheimer's The Look of Silence on the killings in Indonesia in the sixties.
The International Jury for the Festival includes documentary-makers Don Askarian (Germany), Jesper Andersen (Denmark), Mathiue Roy (Canada), Siddharth Kak and Gitanjali Rao. IDPA President Mike Pandey, Uma DaCunha, Biju Dhanapalan, Audrius Stonys (Lithuania) and Jane Yu (Taiwan) are members of the National Jury.
